Domaine des Lambrays
2011Clos des LambraysGrand Cru Red barrel
Score: 90-93
Tasted: Jan 14, 2013
Drink: 2019+
Issue: 49
Note: produced from two large parcels of differing vine age – one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 45 years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 20+ years of age
Producer note: Régisseur (resident manager) Thierry Brouin describes 2011 as having produced “excellent reds but also excellent whites. It’s rarer than you might think in Burgundy to have a vintage that produces outstanding wines in both colors at once. We picked from the 31st of August to the 7th of September. There was an enormous amount of sorting required, which included grapes that were either rot-affected or under ripe plus we had a lot of lady bugs removed by our new vibrating sorting table. I used 100% whole clusters and did our usual vinification. I like the 2011s and they are going to surprise people in time with just how good they are.” Brouin noted that just as in 2010, there wasn’t much of the Les Loups made, partially because 2011 was a short crop and partially because there is no longer any young vines from Clos des Lambrays included now. And speaking of the 2010s, the Clos des Lambrays has fulfilled all of its promise that I saw from barrel last year. (Weygandt-Metzler, www.weygandtmetzler.com, Unionville, PA; Berry Brothers & Rudd, www.bbr.com, UK, O.W. Loeb, www.owloeb.com, UK, Howard Ripley, www.howardripley.com, UK, Flint Wines, www.flintwines.com, UK, Uncorked Ltd, www.uncorked.co.uk, UK and Lay & Wheeler, www.laywheeler.com, UK).
Tasting note: This offers a further step up in aromatic complexity with its ripe and expressive nose of red berry fruit liqueur, cassis, plum and violets. There is a very suave and seductive texture to the medium weight plus flavors that possess an abundance of mouth coating extract, all wrapped in a long, balanced and delicious finish where a touch of wood is in evidence. This is certainly very good but somewhat curiously it does not seem to separate itself as much as usual from the Les Loups though it is clearly more structured.
