Producer note: Etienne de Montille was not available at the time of my visit and thus I do not have his views on the 2017 vintage. Brian Sieve, the cellar master, did note however that 2017 “gave us clean and ripe chardonnay. I would describe it as being similar to what 2011 gave us in terms of the fruit yet the wines are better balanced. Tasting note: This too is very firmly reduced and offers almost nothing discernible on the nose save for hints of wood and citrus. Like the Poruzots, there is fine volume and once again very good concentration to the broad-shouldered and imposingly-scaled flavors that possess a highly attractive mouth feel that continues onto the delicious, sappy and citrusy and overtly mineral-inflected finale. This compact and very serious effort is clearly going to require extended cellaring to reveal its full, and considerable, potential.
