Producer note: Etienne Grivot describes 2008 as a vintage that had an “early start to the vegetative cycle. April, May and most of June were good if not perfect though July and August were pretty much terrible and good weather did not return until the middle of September. Then, with cool but sunny weather and the north wind, maturities exploded, the rot dried up and this short period frankly saved the harvest. We had already done leaf pulling on the north side of the vines so the wind was doubly effective as stopping the rot in its tracks as well as causing damaged berries to fall to the ground. We began picking on the 24th of September and lost between 5 and 15% through sorting, depending of course on the vineyard in question. Grape maturities varied but if you did a thorough sorting job and had reasonable yields, what remained was actually quite ripe. I really like 2008, in fact it reminds me of 1993 but with sweeter tannins. While it’s too early to say for sure, I am cautiously optimistic that 2008 could possibly be a great vintage.” The Grivot ’07s are pretty wines that should reward medium-term cellaring but they are not as interesting as his ’08s, at least when considered as a group. Tasting note: Here the nose is spicier still with clove, anise and soy hints adding breadth to the dense dark berry fruit aromas that are very much in keeping with the textured, mouth coating and serious flavors that are overtly muscular as they build to a powerful, driving and explosive finish. This is impressive.
