Domaine Cécile Tremblay
2013Chambolle-Musigny – Cuvée La Cabotte ♥Villages Red barrel
Score: 89-91
Tasted: Jan 15, 2015
Drink: 2020+
Issue: 57
Outstanding Top value
Note: from Les Fremières, Aux Echanges and Les Maladières
Producer note: Cécile Tremblay told me that the conversion of her vineyard to organic farming is now complete and they are certified as such. She describes 2013 as having a “very difficult growing season that seemingly presented us with one problem after another. The poor spring weather resulted in a long and very uneven flowering that seriously decreased yields. I chose to begin picking on the 2nd of October and picked slowly and carefully. For example, I had my pickers go through Feusselottes 3 different times as that is just how heterogeneous the ripeness levels were. Yields were about 5% lower than they were in 2012 though it was worse in Vosne as my old vines there produced 30% less. Ironically, as challenging as the growing season and harvest were, the vinifications were as simple as could be. I used from zero to 95% whole clusters as I liked the look of them in some parcels and in others they seemed less interesting. I did exactly one pump over and no punch downs at all during the 3 weeks the fermentations lasted. I almost felt lazy! The grape quality reminded me quite a bit of 2008 as there was a quite a bit of potassium in the stems and a lot of malic acidity yet the malos were of average length. Even so I was surprised that they didn’t last longer as many of my neighbors reported that theirs were slow to finish. As to the wines, I like them because they’re super fresh and transparent but it’s honestly hard to know exactly what they will become. I say this because they have not stopped changing and every month they are something different.” I found the quality of the Tremblay 2013s to be outstanding and to generally transcend the general quality of the vintage. (Weygandt-Metzler, www.weygandtmetzler.com, Unionville, PA; Wine Trail, UK; L’Imperatrice Fine Wines, www.imperatrice.com.hk, Hong Kong/China).
Tasting note: There is enough reduction present to flatten the fruit though the floral notes are discernible. Here too the mouth feel is quite fine as the supporting tannins shaping the middle weight flavors are also very fine-grained. I like the sense of volume which is enhanced by the generous amount of dry extract that imparts a velvety texture to the saline-inflected finale. This is a wine of finesse, indeed it is very Chambollesque.
