Domaine Jean Grivot
2013 Vosne-Romanée “Les Beaux Monts” ♥1er Cru Red barrel
Score: 91-94
Tasted: Jan 15, 2015
Drink: 2025+
Issue: 57
Outstanding
Producer note: Etienne Grivot describes 2013 as a “difficult vintage pretty much from start to finish. We had another poor flowering which of course wasn’t good for yields but on the other hand, a big crop with the kind of weather we had never would have properly ripened. We waited to begin picking until the 5th of October and brought in a small but relatively clean crop that required only a bit of sorting. Potential alcohols were average but the phenolic ripeness was excellent. In this sense 2013 reminds me of 1978. Also like 1978 the malos were extremely slow to finish and during this time they were monolithic and hard to read. Once the malos were finished though the wines exploded and began to display completely different characters. Now they are juicy, energetic and super fresh with solid supporting acidity and ripe tannins. In fact I think the 2013s are presently a bit deceptive because they seem so inviting, as though you could enjoy them right now. But I believe that they will still be with us 30 years from now because they’re so well-balanced plus they’ve got more mid-palate stuffing then is readily apparent.” Even while heaping praise onto the 2013s Grivot repeated what he told me last year that the 2012s “are the best wines that I have ever made.” Grivot also noted that his 2012s, five of which are revisited below, were bottled in March 2014. (Diageo Château and Estate Wines, www.diageowines.com, Napa, CA; Ballantynes of Cowbridge, www.ballantynes.co.uk, UK, Seckford Wines, www.seckfordwines.co.uk, UK, Flint Wines, www.flintwines.com, UK, Berry Brothers & Rudd, www.bbr.com, UK, Bibendum Wine Ltd., www.bibendum-wine.co.uk, UK, Goedhuis & Co., www.goedhuis.com, UK, Howard Ripley, www.howardripley.com, UK, Uncorked Ltd, www.uncorked.co.uk, UK and Lay & Wheeler, www.laywheeler.com, UK).
Tasting note: There is enough reduction present to render the seemingly ripe nose difficult to evaluate. The mouth feel of the more obviously mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors is even finer with that lovely sense of underlying tension adding lift to the firm, serious and mouth coating finish. This impeccably well-balanced effort will also require an extended stay in a cool cellar but should be well worth the wait.
