Domaine Jean Grivot
2012 Clos de VougeotGrand Cru Red barrel
Score: 92-94
Tasted: Jan 15, 2014
Drink: 2027+
Issue: 53
Note: 50+ year old vines
Producer note: Etienne Grivot unabashedly describes 2012 vintage as “one of the best that I have ever made, perhaps even the best as I find the wines that special. Curiously enough in a vintage where everyone reported low yields, you actually had to have them because if you didn’t there wasn’t sufficient phenolic maturity to make great wine. I would call 2012 a modern classic in the sense that the wines are suave but structured and while everyone now says that their wines will be enjoyable young but age well too, 2012 actually delivered wines like that. They have the necessary ripeness levels but also the acidities that allow the wines to retain good freshness and as well as fine terroir transparency. I love the wines and I believe that they will be very popular with my clients.” I agree with Grivot in that his 2012s are indeed quite special and that they should age extremely well. In my view Grivot outperformed the general quality of vintage in both 2012 and 2011. Grivot noted that his 2011s, four of which were revisited below, were bottled in February and March 2013. He also noted that the malos were extremely long and slow in 2012 and that several wines had only just finished. As such, many of the 2012s were reduced at the time of my late November visit. (Diageo Château and Estate Wines, www.diageowines.com, Napa, CA; Ballantynes of Cowbridge, www.ballantynes.co.uk, UK, Seckford Wines, www.seckfordwines.co.uk, UK, Flint Wines, www.flintwines.com, UK, Berry Brothers & Rudd, www.bbr.com, UK, Bibendum Wine Ltd., www.bibendum-wine.co.uk, UK, Goedhuis & Co., www.goedhuis.com, UK, Howard Ripley, www.howardripley.com, UK, Uncorked Ltd, www.uncorked.co.uk, UK and Lay & Wheeler, www.laywheeler.com, UK).
Tasting note: A cool, restrained and unusually elegant nose combines various red berries with notes of dried flowers, freshly turned earth and sandalwood. There is excellent volume and intensity to the focused, intense and quite powerful medium weight plus flavors that culminate in a driving, even explosive finish that coats the mouth and lingers for an impressively long time. I very much like the harmony of elements though note that this is unlikely to be an early drinker.
