Producer note: Sébastian Cathiard observed that “despite a very difficult growing season the 2012 vintage is genuinely great in my view. We began picking on the 22nd of September and brought in remarkably clean fruit that required very little in the way of sorting. Because the level of phenolic ripeness was complete I decide to push the extraction somewhat compared to what I did in 2011. This is to say that I did a cool maceration of around 10 days with a total cuvaison of 24 to 25 days depending on the wine. I then maintained the temperature at 32° C for around one week to fix the colors and polymerize the tannins. I am optimistic about the results and I believe that some of the 2012s will age and improve for years to come.” I am of the same view as the young Cathiard as he has indeed crafted some exceptionally promising 2012s though don’t ignore his 2011s either as both the Reignots and Malconsorts are first rate. Note that Cathiard explained that none of his wines had been racked and thus many of them were reduced. Lastly, he noted that his 2011s, four of which I revisited below, were bottled in April 2013. Tasting note: This is the first wine to display no reduction with its markedly floral aromas of cassis, black cherry, spice and pungent earth. There is an opulent mouth feel as there is excellent mid-palate volume and concentration to the medium-bodied flavors, all wrapped in an extract-rich and palate coating finish where a touch of wood influence surfaces. This is impressive.
