Producer note: Etienne Grivot describes 2010 as a vintage that had a “difficult vegetative cycle that started with the terrible frost of December 2009 where we lost on the order of 3,200 vines or the rough equivalent of one-third of a hectare. Then the flowering was troubled, which contributed mightily toward a very high incidence of shot berries. Then the summer was relatively cool though due to the fact that yields were so low the vines were able to ripen their fruit anyway. We began picking on the 23rd of September and brought in relatively clean fruit that required some sorting work. I would estimate our sorting losses at between 4 and 8% depending on the parcel. Potential alcohols ranged between 12 and 12.8% which means that I chaptalized on average between .3 and .6% of a degree. The bunches themselves were quite small with fewer berries than usual and with very thick skins. I was extremely pleased with the high level of phenolic ripeness as the tannins were fully mature with textbook-like acidities. I decided to vinify as I usually do, which is to say with no punch downs. Initially I thought that I might have made a mistake as the wines seemed to lack structure but once the relatively long malos finished, I saw that this was not at all the case and that the wines are really quite firm without being aggressive. Now that the 2010s are beginning to take shape, I am really excited as they offer everything that we look for in our wines in terms of concentration, balance, elegance and ageability. Moreover, because they are energetic and so very refreshing to drink, I believe that they are the kind of wines that will be enjoyable no matter when they’re opened.” As to the now in-bottle ’09s, they have fully justified the confidence I placed in them at this time last year and the Richebourg is truly brilliant though the Beaux Monts, Ech and the Clos de Vougeot are not far behind. Tasting note: A lightly spiced nose of ripe red currant, plum, violets and ample earth influence where the latter continues onto the caressing middle weight flavors that are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a seductive mouth feel and buffers the very firm tannic spine. I like the precision and the finish is a lovely combination of power, refinement, persistence and excellent depth.
