Domaine François Lamarche
2010Vosne-Romanée “La Croix Rameau” 1er1er Cru Red barrel
Score: 89-92
Tasted: Jan 10, 2012
Drink: 2017+
Issue: 45
Producer note: Nicole Lamarche told me that 2010 “provided excellent raw materials but not much quantity as we were down about one-third relative to a normal crop as there was a very high incidence of shot berries. We began picking on the 24th of September and brought in generally very clean fruit that averaged right at 13% in potential alcohol. We did a long but very soft vinification that emphasized mostly pumping over with very little punching down. The goal was to have extremely fresh wines that would be approachable young but also possess the balance to age too and I think that we accomplished that.” I have to agree with Lamarche that they did indeed achieve truly remarkable finesse across their various terroirs. The tannins are extremely sophisticated and many wines have a seductively silky mouth feel. (Jeanne-Marie de Champs, e-mail: jeanne-marie@jmdechamps.com, NY is the agent with many regional importers, including Scott Paul Wines, www.scottpaul.com, Portland, OR, Burgundy Wine Company, www.burgundywinecompany.com, NY, NY, and Glazer’s, www.glazers.com, Dallas, TX, PA; Bibendum Wine Ltd., www.bibendum-wine.co.uk, UK, Goedhuis & Co., www.goedhuis.com, UK, Laytons, www.laytons.co.uk, UK, Richards Walford & Co., Ltd., www.r-w.co.uk, UK, The Wine Society, www.thewinesociety.com, UK, Seckford Wines, www.seckfordwines.co.uk, UK and Raeburn Fine Wines, www.raeburnfinewines.com, Edinburgh, UK).
Tasting note: Mild reduction reduces the expressiveness of the aromas yet lurking beneath the funk are clear spice notes and the fruit seems notably ripe. Like the Suchots this enjoys a very sophisticated mouth feel as the supporting tannins are also very fine-grained. This is so supple and sufficiently forward that it could already be enjoyed as the structure is completely enrobed by the abundant sap on the moderately complex but attractively persistent finish. Despite the present elevated accessibility, this should reward 7 to 10 years of cellar time.
