Producer note: Bernard Gros has ceded the direction of the domaine to his son Vincent, though he always seems to be present busily working away whenever I am there. The younger conducted the tasting and with respect to the 2018 campaign noted that “we waited later than most to pick as we just didn’t feel that we had the necessary phenolic maturities. As such we didn’t start until the 15th of September and brought in very ripe fruit that needed no concentrating or chaptalization. Despite having picked so late our volumes were about the same as those we realized in 2017. Potential alcohols averaged around 14% which explains why the musts needed no additions. I used no sulfur during the vinifications which I believe gives us a cleaner fermentation and also seems to contribute to a different texture even if the difference is very subtle. Overall there is much to like with the 2018s and I believe our clients will love them as they’re generous and ripe yet quite refreshing.” I noted in my comments the last two years that the wood treatment seems more modulated since Vincent took over responsibility for the vinifications and this was again the case in 2018. Gros noted that the 2017s, revisited below, were bottled in February 2019.
Tasting note: This is aromatically quite similar to the Vosne 1er though with the addition of a pretty hint of lavender. The impressively rich, concentrated and opulent flavors possess a suave and velvety mouthfeel before culminating in a robust and powerful if somewhat inelegant finish. This may age out successfully but I doubt that it will ever be an Ech of refinement.
