Producer note: Emmanuel Rouget described 2019 as a “vintage that seemed like it was going to be precocious as it started early but that’s not how things wound up as the ambient temperatures are always in phase with the vegetative cycle. May was quite dry and June was already very hot, and the dryness continued and the combination of the two was enough to disrupt the flowering as there was a high incidence of shatter. From the standpoint of heat, things did not improve in either July or August though there was just enough rain to prevent the vines from losing their leaves. Still, there were vines that shut down, which made choosing the right picking dates tricky. In the end, we waited until the 20th of September to start with our Savigny vines and then continued through to the 27th. Yields were way down, in fact more than 40% down with excellent ripeness levels that in some cases exceeded 15% in potential alcohol. The fermentations finished without any problems though the malos were extended. As to the wines, they are very powerful, indeed muscular; in fact I would describe them as even more powerful than either 2005 or 2015. Even though 2019 has more finesse and refinement than 2018, I prefer my 2018s.” I was, apparently anyway, more impressed with Rouget’s 2019s than he is as I did not find them to be quite so outsized and robust as he does. In fairness, he has seen them since day 1 and I have only one instance of comparison, but I will say that they do seem very promising. In case anyone missed my comment last year, fans of the domaine are not seeing things as there is a new wine in the range as Rouget purchased a .15 ha parcel of the Savigny 1er Les Lavières.
Tasting note: Deep ruby color. Moderate wood frames very ripe yet still fresh aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, hoisin, jasmine tea and a range of floral nuances. There dense, serious and powerful larger-scaled flavors possess a velvety mouthfeel on the exceptionally rich but noticeably warm finale. This is an atypical Ech that is quite interesting in its fashion though with that said, it’s not what I personally look for.
